Splints are devices used to restrict movement or immobilize an extremity. They are used as a resource of choice in emergency situations, although their indications are very diverse.
Nursing Considerations:
-The splint used to immobilize a fracture must be of adequate length, covering a sufficient extension of the limb and immobilizing the joints located above and below the injury.
-It must be verified that the padding of the splint protects the soft tissues and prevents their compression against hard planes, especially in bone ridge areas, once the bandage that fixes the immobilization is applied.
-Monitor for the appearance of compressive complications in the limb on which an immobilization splint has been placed. Peripheral pulses, mobility, coloration and sensitivity of exposed parts should be evaluated.
-Instruct the person about the care and precautions to take while using the splint.
