The Bologna declaration (1999) created the European Higher Education Area and eliminated the Diploma in Nursing, becoming known as the Degree in Nursing. The first class of Nursing Graduates in Spain is from the 2009 – 2013 academic year. The Degree in Nursing consists of 4 academic years, with a total of 240 ECTS (European Credits). The preparation of the Final Degree Project is mandatory.
The Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing aims to train generalist nursing personnel, with scientific training and a critical, reflective and humanistic attitude to assess, identify, act and evaluate the health and care needs of people, families and the community.
Therefore, nursing degree studies aim for future graduates to:
- Acquire knowledge of both nursing science and health, human and social sciences, to respond to the health needs and expectations of individuals, families, groups and the community.
- Develop skills for the application of nursing care protocols and procedures.
- Gain the ability to establish positive relationships with the people you interact with.
- Acquire the ability to act based on ethical principles, respecting the values and rights of the person, to maintain their dignity in any situation.
- Develop critical thinking and reflective practice, and use methodology and scientific evidence to make nursing care decisions.
By carrying out internships in healthcare centers, students have the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom and explore, at the same time, the different healthcare realities in our environment. In this way, it is oriented towards job placement and postgraduate training.
The access routes to the Degree in Nursing are the following:
- Any type of high school + Selectivity (PAAU).
- Higher Level Training Cycles. Students who are in possession of the titles of higher vocational training technician, higher plastic arts and design technician, or higher sports technician referred to in articles 44, 53 and 65 of Organic Law 2/2006, of 3 May of Education, or equivalent qualifications, can access official university degree education without the need for a test.
- University entrance test for people over 25 years of age.
- University entrance test for people over 45 years of age.
- Students from foreign educational systems.
- Students from other Universities.
- University Graduates.
To have a specialization in the Degree in Nursing you must complete the EIR or a Master’s Degree. The Master’s credits range between 60 and 120, and the Final Master’s Thesis is also mandatory. To access the Doctorate degree, you must accredit a minimum of 300 ECTS, between Bachelor’s and Master’s studies. During the Doctorate there are periods of training and research, which ends with the presentation and defense of the Doctoral Thesis in front of a tribunal.
