Virtual reality (VR) is an environment of real-looking scenes or objects. The most common meaning refers to an environment generated by computer technology, which creates in the user the sensation of being immersed in it. Said environment is viewed by the user normally through a device known as virtual reality glasses or helmet. This can be accompanied by other devices, such as gloves or special suits, which allow greater interaction with the environment as well as the perception of different stimuli that intensify the sensation of reality.
The application of virtual reality, although initially focused on the field of entertainment and video games, has spread to many other fields, such as medicine, archaeology, artistic creation, military training or flight simulations.
In health, new VR applications are increasingly emerging, the benefits of which for patients are scientifically and medically validated. In this sense, we want to show you some relevant examples of the implementation of this technology in various medical specialties.
In psychology, the use of Virtual Reality has been quite novel since it means that the subject is no longer in a passive position, they can move around the environment and interact with it in different ways, making the interaction more intimate and thereby gaining ergonomics.
The main applications that have been developed so far have to do with exposure techniques commonly used for the treatment of phobias, but also in other fields such as eating disorders. Also, there are already numerous applications of virtual reality for psychological and psychomotor rehabilitation.
Health professionals can also train through virtual reality. Once again, innovation and technology are illuminating new ways to determine the processes to follow with various diseases, and in this case, virtual reality is displaced from the image of video games to be part of a medical reality that is very close to becoming in something everyday.
